A WOMAN OF INFERIOR RANK

When a female becomes a widow, she cannot wear coloured borders to her clothes, nor any ornament, excepting a necklace of wooden beads, and in order to exterminate from her mind all ideas of vanity, her head is shaved and she becomes a kind of servant in her own family. The plate is from The Costume of Hindostan.

Belgian marine artist Frans Balthazar Solvyns lived in Calcutta between 1791 and 1803 and is considered one of the earliest printmakers in India, besides Thomas Daniell. During his time in India, he documented 18th-century Indian culture and habitats, including the people, their occupations, festivals and religious customs.
