DESCRIPTION-In his military accoutrements, in which he travels, and which is particularly requisite in the upper provinces of Bengal. They are in some parts of India called Gollars,and employed as well to guard houses and offices as to carry specie from one province to another. The plate is from The Costume of Hindostan.

ARTIST DETAILS-Belgian marine artist Frans Balthazar Solvyns lived in Calcutta between 1791 and 1803 and is considered one of the earliest printmakers in India, besides Thomas Daniell. During his time in India, he documented 18th-century Indian culture and habitats, including the people, their occupations, festivals and religious customs.
