Folk tales of Bengal was published in 1883 by Reverend Lal Behari Day, is a seminal collection of 22 traditional Bengali stories, often illustrated with famous artworks by Warwick Goble (added in 1912). These tales, transcribed from oral accounts by village elders, include myths, fairy tales, and ghost stories like the boy with the moon on his forehead and the match-making jackal. The book is divided into three categories: animal tales, fairy tales, and ghost stories. The tales are based on oral traditions and were collected from various parts of Bengal, including modern-day Bangladesh and the Indian states of West Bengal and Assam.
The book tipped in frontispiece and 31 colour tipped-in plates on thick paper by Warwick Goble along with captions; original full red cloth binding with intricate patterns in gilt and titles to the front board and spine. It comes in a handcrafted decorative solander box.
