James Forbes was a writer and artist employed by the British East India Company at the age of 16. In 1765 he was sent to India and in the 17 years that he was in India he travelled to various towns in Gujarat, Poona, Bombay, Konkan and the Malabar Coast and compiled notes on every aspect of the country including botany, ethnology, and architecture .Oriental Memoirs, largely based on his notes and sketches, was subtitled selected and abridged from a series of familiar letters written during seventeen years residence in India: including observations on parts of Africa and South America, and a narrative of occurrences in four India voyages was published in volumes beginning in 1813. The book remains a valued record of the culture, flora and fauna of India at the time.
