Captain Robert Melville Grindlay (1786-1877) was a British soldier, artist, and banker who served in the East India Company’s Bombay Army, later founding the multinational firm Grindlays Bank and publishing a book of sketches and drawings of India. Grindlay joined the East India Company’s Bombay Army as a cadet in 1803, serving until his retirement on half-pay in 1820. During his time in India, Grindlay became a self-taught artist, making numerous sketches and drawings of the Indian subcontinent’s landscapes, architecture, and customs. He published a book titled “Scenery, Costumes and Architecture chiefly on the Western Side of India,” which features his detailed and colourful illustrations of India. Upon returning to England, he established the firm Leslie & Grindlay in 1828, which later evolved into Grind lays Bank, a multinational commercial firm that provided banking and travel services for the British Army and businesses in India and beyond. Grindlay also engaged in various philanthropic activities. This is considered as one of the finest work after Thomas & William Daniells.
